Abstract
This chapter explores the tensions between a philological model for English Studies, whereby English language and literature are studied in a cohesive fashion, and an Anglo-American model of the discipline, in which language and literature are regarded as distinct disciplines. This chapter also introduces the volume as a whole and the contributions, which explore different aspects of English Studies with the situation in Bulgaria and Romania particularly in view.
