Abstract

About: Designing advances our understanding of design thinking through different analyses of a common set of data. The data comprises video recordings of design meetings taking place during the course of two very different design projects, both examples of the everyday practice of professional designers. Researchers from leading centres around the world were invited to analyse the material and apply their research expertise to show how analysing design meetings can increase our understanding of design as a social process. The twenty-one contributions to this book are the result of an extensive international collaboration. They draw on a rich variety of methodological positions, research backgrounds and design disciplines – including architecture, product design, engineering, applied linguistics, communication studies, cognitive psychology, and discourse studies.

Collectively these studies comprise a state-of-the-art overview of design thinking research. About: Designing will be of interest to design researchers at any level, as well as specialists in a broad range of design disciplines and social studies.
