Abstract
It is possible to view a technical field through the prism of its terminology; dictionary definitions provide a particular kind of description of a field. The chapter explores the nature of changes which have come about in the process of accessing dictionary information during the process of writing technical texts. It proposes more effective ways of incorporating specialised background knowledge into dictionary reference tools, including 'reusable' information in the form of ready-made chunks of text.
