AI Law and Legal Training: Interim Report

Ryan, Francine; Hardie, Liz; Gooch, Daniel; Waugh, Kevin; Barker, Kim and Barrett, Dan (2025). AI Law and Legal Training: Interim Report. The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.

Abstract

This project, funded by UKRI’s Responsible AI Skills Programme, brings together a team from The Open University, the University of Lincoln, and Citizens Advice. It aims to create free, open educational resources to help the public, advice organisations, small law firms, students, and academics understand and use generative AI (GenAI) responsibly in legal contexts.

GenAI tools, like ChatGPT, are becoming widely used, but knowledge about their risks and responsible use in law is still limited. Free resources are vital to help people, especially those without easy access to legal help, use GenAI safely and ethically.

To shape the learning materials, the team ran three workshops between November 2024 and January 2025. This report shares what they learned from the workshops and how this informed the course content to meet the real needs of these groups.
