This chapter gives an overview of the field of Academic Literacies, pointing to key empirical and theoretical landmarks, before focusing specifically on the interface between Academic literacies (‘Ac Lits’) and EAP, in keeping with the theme of the volume. A key aim is to explore links/parallels and divergences with specific traditions within EAP, particularly approaches which adopt an explicitly critical orientation towards linguistics and semiotic practices in academia.
