Abstract
We introduced voluntary group work on a first-year undergraduate statistics module and this report discusses our findings. Students conducted a seedling growing experiment and uploaded the data to a shared database. The group work involved students investigating and discussing the data from this shared database in an online environment; the intention being for them to create appropriate plots and analyse the data. Our aim was for students to produce a group findings’ document; collaborating on this and working as a group.
To ascertain the students’ opinions about, and experience of, group work, we surveyed the students before and after the group work activity. We found the feedback regarding group work was negative before the group work activity and neutral after. We were successful in encouraging statistics’ students to communicate with one another.
