Abstract
Learning in an extraordinary job - professional development matters in social work
Keynote Address
Professional learning is a central aspect of the extraordinary social work role at all career stages. Learning as a social worker is an intricate web of sensory and emotional experiences that span places, spaces and tasks (Ferguson, 2021). Interwoven themes that are part of learning include: journey of the self; navigating landscape and place; navigating tasks; learning through others; learning through the body; and learning by chance. Recognising the complexity of social work and what it means to learn as a social worker, can help individual and organisational plans for development. By strengthening how we understand and engage in learning, we achieve a stronger profession that is defined by the needs, interests and unique nature and nuance of what it is to be a social worker in Scotland.
