Abstract

Access to slides in advance of online learning events is thought to benefit many students, including those with English as a second language and disabilities, and is given as a reasonable adjustment in the disability profiles of some OU students. Universal design principles (e.g. Burgstahler & Cory, 2008) suggest that this practice would benefit all students, not least as some will have undeclared needs. However, not all tutors are keen or willing to share tutorial slides in advance, for example because they perceive that it might lead to lower attendance at the live event. The literature gives a mixed picture regarding whether accessing slides in advance impacts students’ attendance of learning events, with both positive and negative effects reported.

This project explores tutor slide sharing practice for three STEM modules studied by c.3000 students annually. It aims to identify the perceived benefits and barriers to advance slide sharing, through carrying out online surveys of tutors and students on the modules. Our presentation outlines the key quantitative and qualitative findings from the surveys. These have enabled us to determine practice in sharing (tutors) and accessing (students) slides, together with their perceptions of the benefits and barriers of sharing online tutorial slides in advance. The results will be used to make recommendations to those who design and run curricula to promote an inclusive approach to slide sharing for students.
