Abstract

This chapter will look at the importance of breast health for women participating in sport and fitness, and how those working with female athletes, as well as the athletes themselves, can ensure that the correct breast support for optimal performance is chosen. The chapter begins by introducing the anatomy and structure of the breast, before analysing the types of breast motion and the biomechanics of breast movement in a range of different activities. Breast bounce and breast motion are important considerations, and both can be managed through different types of sports bras, but athletes need to consider a range of factors when choosing the correct bra for their activity. The types of sports bras available and the support they offer is discussed alongside the impact of poorly fitting breast support on the breast motion and how this can potentially affect the athlete and their performance. This chapter is designed to increase the knowledge of breast health for coaches and athletes as well as to improve understanding of the challenges related to breast support that female athletes may encounter and the relationship with performance and participation.
