Abstract
The reticence of STEM students to get involved in group work is well recognised. At The Open University, in the school of maths and stats we are experimenting with a method of successfully introducing group work into a level 1 statistics module and to take this forward to level 2 and 3 statistics modules. Built into the assessment structure on our level 1 module we already have a practical experiment where data is collected individually, we propose to introduce a trial of volunteer students to work in groups in an online environment to share this data. The students will discuss any issues and suggest further analysis that they could perform on the shared data.
During this presentation we will discuss the student's attitude to group work from both before and after they have worked in a group and how we will improve the student experience based on this feedback. We will also share our experience of the group work itself, what went well and where we feel improvements are possible.
Plain Language Summary
We introduce group work on a level 1 statistics module M140, the module has an experiment where students conduct an experiment. In addition to this experiment, students upload their data to a shared database. Our group work involves students discussing their results and the combined database in an online environment. The intention is that students suggest further analysis and produce summaries of this data
