Abstract

This chapter narrates the journey of my linguistic career, tracing my growing awareness not only of the strengths but also the limitations of linguistics as a discipline in uncovering, questioning, and challenging the power structures that underpin and perpetuate injustice. In a world beset by ongoing conflicts, colonization, displacement, famine, looming environmental crises and widening wealth disparities, the imperative to expose and confront power imbalances has never been more urgent. While I write as a fervent advocate for the capacity of linguistics to illuminate and challenge the workings of power through language, I also write as someone who has come to recognize the inherent constraints of linguistics, in isolation, in effecting meaningful and sustained change towards a fairer, more equitable world.
