Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to explore how serious games can be used as an interactive and immersive teaching tool in hospitality management higher education, enabling leadership development. Serious games provide a powerful mechanism for developing leadership competences through dialogic activities.

Design/Methodology/Approach:Three types of dialogues are theoretically conceptualized: (a) dialogical interactions with real others, (b) quasi-dialogical interactions with invisible others and (c) quasi-dialogical interactions with artifacts of a game. Illustrative examples are offered, using a leadership serious game, as a case study in a graduate management class. A qualitative analysis of cognitive interviews is conducted, in which hospitality management graduate students reflect on their „gameful‟ learning experience, how it has enhanced multiple dialogical interactions and increased engagement, developing students‟ leadership competences.

Findings: The paper provides evidence that serious games can potentially impact not only what can be learnt, but also how it can be learnt, complementing conventional hospitality management teaching methods. The findings demonstrate the dialogic nature of leadership development with different types of dialogues that can be developed concurrently or at different times.

Originality: The paper provides an original research which contributes to the discussion on enriching hospitality management higher education curricula with truly interactive and engaging teaching material, which can be used to enrich online and onsite classes
