Abstract
Legal personhood is a fundamental concept in jurisprudence, referring to the capacity of an entity to have rights and obligations under the law. The notion of legal personhood has been extended over time, leading to significant debates and developments. These developments challenge traditional notions of who or what can be considered a “person” under the law, redefining the boundaries of legal responsibility, rights and governance. This presentation will look at the historical development of the concept of legal personhood, focusing on the more recent philosophical and legal evolution in relation to non-human entities and what the practical implications might be for multispecies justice.
