Abstract

Janice Ansine, Senior Project Manager for Citizen Science at the Open University, delivers a keynote address discussing a holistic approach to citizen science projects as part of the RSB Plant Health Summer Conference 2023. This event was held on Zoom on Thursday 25th May as part of the RSB's Plant Health Series in partnership with Defra. The session was chaired by Professor Jeremy Pritchard FRSB, Professor of Life Sciences Education and Director of Education at the University of Birmingham.

This presentation shares best practice from citizen science projects and initiatives at The Open University, which connect science research, teaching, learning and engagement. These links facilitate a holistic approach making science learning accessible, impacting different audiences.

Examples highlighted will demonstrate the use of innovative technology-based tools that support informal and formal learning about biodiversity, while building skills, contributing to biological recording and research. In addition to this open media and broadcast activities; communications, outreach and events encourage public participation and engagement. These include:
• www.iSpotnature.org (iSpot) encourages recording wildlife observations while learning and building species identification skills. iSpot contributes to associated research projects: Cos4Cloud , DECIDE and SENSE.
• www.Treezilla.org (Treezilla) is an ambitious effort to catalogue the UK’s trees while building understanding of their ecosystem service value. Treezilla also contributes to research i.e. the UK Future of Treescapes project Branching Out.
