Abstract

Today, women make up the vast majority of yoga practitioners; surveys of practitioners in the Americas, Europe and Australasia often estimate that 75-90% of contemporary yoga practitioners – and this demographic can in most cases be further described as upper-middle class and well-educated. Understanding this contemporary gender imbalance requires some reflection and explanation.
