Subject knowledge in computerised dictionaries

Kukulska-Hulme, Agnes (1990). Subject knowledge in computerised dictionaries. In: Thelen, Marcel and Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, Barbara eds. Translation and Meaning, Volume Part 1. Maastricht: Euroterm Maastricht, pp. 48–56.

Abstract

The paper examines how a translator may use computerised dictionaries along with generated concordances and collocations to expand their 'background knowledge' of a specialised domain. It illustrates this with a case study from an IBM technical manual for the management of a computer network, focusing on interpretations of the word "alert".
