Abstract
In this paper, I develop an original strand of research based on what I have termed ‘literary caregiving’ at war, the sites of which include the War Library, begun by Helen Mary (May) Gaskell in 1914, and the library at Endell Street Military Hospital, run by ex-members of the WSPU in London’s Covent Garden. My paper begins by setting out my work to date in this area and then signals the beginning of its next phase: contextualisation via, for example, suffrage networks, nineteenth-century philanthropy and early social work.
