Abstract

This chapter introduces the role of packaging in the supply chain, describes its functions and focuses the discussion on paper packaging and its role in sustainability, packaging being a very important and integral element/part of any supply chain.

Traditionally, the main function of packaging was to protect the product, but over the years this has developed further, with innovative venues for sustainability. In the following case study, a typical paper packaging supply chain is introduced and various options discussed from the point of view of sustainability.
