Abstract
This paper provides an overview of some of the long-run changes in the relationship between the financial and non-financial aggregate sectors of the South African economy. In particular the paper considers the impact of financialisation on capital investment, consumption, inequality and the capital account. The growth
trajectory of the apartheid and post-apartheid periods are considered. It is argued that the nature and form of financialisation that has taken placed in South Africa is conditioned by the nature of industrial and financial developments before 1994.
