Abstract
This is the first full account of the life of John Cairncross which draws on recently released security service files as well as private papers, family correspondence and interviews with family members, friends and former colleagues. It challenges previous second hand accounts of Cairncross's life, notably that he was a dedicated communist, acting in collaboration with other members of the Cambridge spy ring, while providing the first detailed account of his post-espionage life.
