Abstract
This short conference paper deals with observations arising from the practice of creating courses for the study of terminology, translation and technical writing at Aston University in Birmingham, UK. It highlights the need for training in communication for professional contexts and signals the emergence of new information technology environments that can support work in the domain of terminology. It includes a critique of existing approaches to technical writing.
