Abstract
Lithium has been chemically inserted into compounds of the type alpha -Fe2-xTixO3 (x < ca. 0.25). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows the partial reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy shows a decrease in magnitude of the magnetic hyperfine fields characteristic of the <alpha>-Fe2O3 structure. Similar results have been recorded from materials of formulation alpha -Fe2-xMxO3 (M = Sn, Mg).
