Abstract
Novelists often take on the challenge of developing the voices of fictional characters whose experiences are very different from their own. At the NAWE conference four Creative Writing PhD students from the Open University discussed their strategies in exploring a diversity of voices separated from their authors by gender, location, disability and culture. In this article each writer offers her thoughts on the process of discovering the voices of her characters.
