Abstract
Vector Quantisation (VQ) has recently emerged as a powerful and widely applicable coding technique for both image processing and speech recogniton. This paper evinces a Fast VQ algorithm and measures both its distortion and perceptual performance as a data compression technique for discrete ship-board marine sounds.
