Abstract

The chapter discusses the history and basic principles of photovoltaic (PV) energy conversion; reviews various ways of reducing the high costs of energy from PV; describes the electrical characteristics of PV cells and modules; discusses the roles of PV energy systems in supplying power in grid-linked and off-grid applications; reviews the economics & environmental impact of PV electricity, examines the resources available from PV systems and how they might be integrated into electricity supply systems; and looks at the world market & future prospects for PV.
