Donnachie, Ian (1986). Economy and society in the seventeenth century in the Highlands. In: Maclean, Loraine ed. The Seventeenth Century in the Highlands. Inverness: Inverness Field Club, pp. 52–59.

Abstract

Examines population and social structure, land and agriculture, concluding that the last real frontier of traditional life on the British mainland was being increasingly penetrated by Scottish Lowland and English capitalism. This led ultimately to demographic/subsistence crises and momentous calamities for Highland society and culture in ensuing centuries.
