After outlining the history of methodological research into oral interactions, notably Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1987), this chapter describes the project of updating that 1987 work to take into account the new phenomena of online oral interactions. The corpus that serves as a basis for each of the successive chapters in the book is described, and core concepts for undertaking the updating project (mediation, communicative affordance, modal density and spatial semiotics) are introduced and discussed.
