Abstract

Based on extensive archival work and on interviews in Britain, France and America, this 469 page, first ever biography of the British poet David Gascoyne (1916-2001), covers his personal background, his early life, the beginnings of his literary career, his years in France before World War Two, his contacts with the Surrealists both in France and in England, his participation in the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London, his war-time experiences as an actor, his mature poetry and translations, his radio work, his paintings, collages and gouaches, his many affairs, his periods of mental illness, his recovery and late marriage, and his subsequent influence over several generations of English poets.
