Abstract
This essay assesses current understanding of some of the controversies surrounding Owen and also points to the opportunities for future scholarship in its assessment of those that have still to be resolved. It addresses the multiple reputations that have been constructed for Owen and explores many of the issues surrounding Owen's astonishingly successful business career and subsequently as a social reformer.
