Abstract
This publication arises from a symposium held in Munster, Westphalia, and is an account of the genealogy of modernism, as expounded by Michael Levenson, with a particular focus on memory in the work of Ford Madox Ford. The governing structure of the paper was reliant on imagery associated with water, and the impressionistic processes of reflection more generally. Much of Ford's written engagement with the past is associated organically with the presence of water, and this can be seen operating in the work of his contemporaries too (Joseph Conrad for example), as I also argue here.
