About the book:
A research collaboration between the The Open University, the University of Adelaide and the BBC World Service Trust (WST), this book is a first-of-its-kind initiative that offers a window into the social and media worlds that typically remain closed to academic inquiry.
By critically analysing the Drama for Development work of the BBC WST and its partners, the book offers insights into a range of highly popular radio and television productions broadcast in such diverse locales as Afghanistan, Burma, Cambodia, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Nigeria and Rwanda. In doing so, it draws together contributions and experiences from academics and researchers working in both the university sector and within the BBC WST (Research and Learning Group).
At the heart of this book lies an examination of what cultural and linguistic translation means in a critical and academic sense, what practices and accommodations it entails, and what imaginative investments it requires. It seeks to break new ground in how we think about, create and research serial drama to effect progressive social change.
