An annotated edition of the surviving correspondence of Cassandra Willoughby Brydges, First Duchess of Chandos, accompanied by a lengthy introduction. This provides a context for reading the letters and also highlights their value for a number of historical topics. These include marriage and matchmaking; women and history of the family; women and financial decision making; South Sea Bubble; medicine and illness; patronage;art and culture in general; science. It has been prepared on the basis of an exhaustive investigation over several years of the letters of both the Duke and the Duchess of Chandos and also of relevant papers held in England and the USA.
