Abstract

We introduce this special issue of papers arising from Studying Professional Software Designers 2010, an NSF-funded workshop that brought together 54 researchers from the design studies and software engineering disciplines - as well as others - to discuss software design, building on the analysis of three videotapes of pairs of software designers addressing a software design problem. We provide context for the papers in the special issue by describing the workshop, discussing software design as a design discipline, and reporting some of the discussions that arose at the workshop, indicating an agenda for research in this area.
