Abstract
A discussion of the claims made for stylometry, i.e. the application of statistical method to authorship attribution. It argues that stylometry is so contested as a method that it cannot be classed as a 'science' but only an aspiration. For this reason its findings cannot be cited as 'evidence' by literary scholars.
