Abstract

Appearing in a volume in a major series on Scottish Life and Society, this reviews key themes in the history of road development in the period. It looks at historiography and sources, methodolgical issues, 17th and 18th century travel, accounts of travellers, statute labour system in Scotland, military, drove and turnpike roads, the social history of travel in the coaching era, impact of the railway, heritage issues, and the potential for further research.
