Abstract
Friendship is a neglected topic in prison sociology. However, detailed discussions of prisoners' personal relationships do exist, and it is possible to identify some common notions of what features of penal institutions are important in shaping inmates' relationships and themes in prisoners' descriptions of their relationships with one another.
