The PALplus television signal consists of two components, namely the vertical helper and the compatible signal. This paper introduces two different modulation techniques which are aimed at enabling embedded digital data transmission within these components. The systems are examined separately under the design constraint of simple implementation, compatibility and minimal artefacts raised by cross-distortions.
