This article began life as an invited short response to an artlce by Mahesh Rangarajan and Ghazala Shahabuddin in Conservation and Society in September 2006, which examined the issue of people's displacement from protected areas in India. The authors sought to synthesise biological and historical approaches, since views of the role of displacement "in conservation policy are sharply divided along disciplinary lines" and this - in short - is not helpful. My response becamse a full-length article in its own right.
