Abstract
This article argues for diverse cities where people can 'rub along' across their differences in the public spaces of the city. These are not the monumental spaces of the urban planners and architects, but are spaces on the margins and out of sight and not necessarily planned. Examples of such spaces are the street markets of cities, city farms and allotments, or abandoned land by the side of railways.
