Abstract
This study of Igbo folktales collected between 1973 and 1987 and of their cultural background, aims at showing the importance of rejoicing in Igbo society - diverse ceremonies, festivals, gatherings and festivities, wrestling and dancing competitions, abundance offered to all. The preparation and serving of the meal, the crowds of invitees, the opportunity of competing skills and showing off in clothing, in dancing - are all componenmts of the rejoicing. And ceremonies reveal the link between festivals, cooking and traditional religion.
